Ocean Literacy: Meeting with Francesca Santoro of UNESCO at MuMa Milazzo
On Friday, September 18 at 6:00 p.m., the MuMa Museo del Mare Milazzo will host the conference “Ocean Literacy: A Meeting with Francesca Santoro”, an event open to the entire community and dedicated to Ocean Literacy, or education about the ocean.
The featured speaker will be Francesca Santoro, Senior Programme Officer of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, one of the leading international experts in Ocean Literacy. For many years, she has been actively involved in promoting ocean education at the international level.
The event is designed as an opportunity for direct dialogue and exchange, with a particular focus on younger generations. Through an inspiring conversation and a question-and-answer session with young students, Francesca Santoro will guide the audience in exploring the profound relationship that connects each of us to the ocean. The discussion will address knowledge, awareness, and individual and collective responsibility for protecting the marine environment.
It will be an opportunity to understand how the ocean affects our lives and, at the same time, how our everyday actions can affect the health of the ocean. Above all, the event aims to give children and young people the opportunity to engage directly with one of the leading international figures in the field of Ocean Literacy—asking questions, sharing ideas, and reflecting on the role that younger generations can play in building a more sustainable future.
The conference will take place at the MuMa Museo del Mare Milazzo, located within the ancient Castle of Milazzo, a site that strongly represents the identity of the city and has, over the years, also become a symbol of the commitment to marine knowledge, scientific outreach, and the protection of the sea.
The event will open with institutional greetings from the Mayor of the City of Milazzo, Pippo Midili; the President of the Capo Milazzo Marine Protected Area, Giovanni Mangano; and the Director and Founder of the MuMa Museo del Mare Milazzo, Carmelo Isgrò.
The event is free and open to the entire community, including adults and, above all, children, teenagers, and young people, who are invited to take an active role in a dialogue about the ocean and the future of our planet.
